Hayward Field Wins DJC Project of the Year, Edward J. Ray Hall Wins First Place, Secondary Education & Vocational Training

On June 15 the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field was honored as DJC’s Project of the Year by the Daily Journal of Commerce’s 2022 TopProjects Awards program, in addition to the Oregon State University – Cascades’ Edward J. Ray Hall being awarded first place in the Secondary Education & Vocational Training category.

Hosting the World Athletics Championships next month, the reimagined Hayward Field creates a sports venue that respects the stadium’s illustrious history while creating a modern, premier stadium designed to connect athletes with fans and provide world class facilities where UO’s track and field student-athletes train, develop, and perform at their highest potential.

Opened in fall of 2021, Edward J. Ray Hall is a four-story, 50,000 sf structure that is net-zero energy ready and utilizes mass timber construction with glulam beams and columns and cross-laminated timber (CLT) floor panels. The building incorporates a wide variety of Oregon-manufactured wood products which supported the local economy and stimulated job opportunities. The state-of-the-art science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) facility expands engineering and computer science offerings, along with digital arts, media and technology studies, along with spaces for health-related programs, teaching and research laboratory space for the kinesiology program and other newly designed programs such as an undergraduate degree in outdoor products. The exterior features a new outdoor amphitheater, along with flexible event space that also functions as an outdoor study and gathering space.

“Edward J. Ray Hall is the fulfillment of a promise to Central Oregon. Being the first building built on a former pumice mine, the team that brought this project together had an affinity for seeing ambiguity as an opportunity. We asked the team to design a building that was net-zero ready, mass timber, used a mechanical system that tied into a geo-thermal system not yet conceived and finally, build it on land that did not yet exist. Luckily, OSU chose a team inspired by the challenge and delivered a project that has changed the conversation about higher education in the high desert of Oregon.”
-Jarrod Penttila, OSU-Cascades Construction Project Manager
